From something to liven up a family weekend, to a pleasant way to while away a few hours as you enjoy yourself on a midweek break, all of our Inns, Hotels and Pubs with Rooms are in great locations for interesting days out at attractions across the North of England & Wales.

Whether adventure or interest is on the menu, read on and discover how close our accommodation is to some great little trains in Wales, the space age interest of Cheshire or the culture and fun of the Lake District.

Activities in The Lake Districts

Join us at the Masons Arms at Strawberry Bank in the Southern Lakes and you’ll be within striking distance of Grizedale Forest. This attraction not only boasts fantastic mountain bike and family cycling trails but is also home to The Lake’s only ‘Go Ape’ treetop excursion.  For something a little more sedate, the diversions of Bowness and Windemere beckon from the Queens Head at Troutbeck.  Take a trip on a lake steamer, a paddle board or even a yacht, when you visit the Lake Windemere waterfront. Alternatively enjoy the world’s supply of galleries and boutique shopping or even the famous Beatrix Potter World attraction, when you explore deeper into the town.  Speaking of Beatrix Potter, a trip to her house when you’re staying at the Queens Head in Hawkshead is a must, if you can fit it in-between exploring the fells.

Attractions in Cheshire

As well as the heritage, golf, cycling and walking options that are available locally, our Cheshire hotels also have a lot to offer when it comes to popular days out for the young & old alike.  If you’re spending a few nights at the Legh Arms in pretty Prestbury then you should take the eight mile drive down the A537 to the University of Manchester’s Jodrell Bank Discovery centre.  Here you can marvel at the Grade 1 listed Lovell Telescope and enjoy a number of other activities on the 35 acre outdoor experience.  Meanwhile in the leafy suburbs of South Manchester, the Bulls Head in Hale Barns is an ideal venue from which to plan a day out at the sporting, shopping and adventure attractions of Old Trafford. Namely; The Manchester United Football Ground, the world famous Trafford Shopping Centre and one of the biggest indoor ski slopes in the UK at The Chill Factore.

Family Days Out near The Yorkshire Dales

Our Inns in and around the Yorkshire Dales offer family attractions to complement their heritage, walking and cycling activities. The Wheatley Arms in Ilkley is a few minutes-drive from TripAdvisor’s #1 attraction in Ilkley… Hesketh Farm Park.  It’s also at the start of The Dales Way … a 70 mile ramble through the best that this national park has to offer.  Up the road at the Tempest Arms you’ll find another popular family day out at Thornton Hall Country Park.  Thornton Hall offers plenty to keep the youngsters occupied with events, a hands-on farm park and even a quadbike trekking adventure.

Visit the Adventure Playground that is North Wales

And so we come to Wales - Let’s start with calmer activities courtesy of the ‘Great little trains of wales’. This is a coalition  of the principality’s primary steam train attractions. The Tal-y-llyn heritage railway, the Fairbourne narrow gauge railway and the Lake Bala steam railway, are all no more than a short puff from the George III in Penmaenpool, on the beautiful Mawddach estuary.  Go north to the Seacroft on Anglesey and you can book an exhilarating RIB ride around the island that leaves from just up the road in Holyhead or enjoy an underwater visit to the Anglesey Sea Zoo . Back south again to the Royal Ship Hotel in Dolgellau and you’re in a great location to balance the walking and mountain biking available from your doorstep with the multiple adrenaline activities available in the area; from the longest zipwire in Europe at Zipworld to the world’s first artificial surfing lagoon at Surf Snowdonia. Phew!
