Demmi, General Manager & Hannah, Head Chef, The Waggon & Horses
Demmi has spent eight years building her career with Robinsons. She started at the Royal Ship as a receptionist, grew her experience at the Wynnstay Arms and the Rising Sun, and today leads as General Manager at The Waggon & Horses.
Hannah joined The Waggon & Horses four years ago as a CDP and has worked her way up to Head Chef. In a kitchen traditionally dominated by men, she’s shown what’s possible when hard work meet opportunity.
What does a “good day” at work look like?
Both Demmi and Hannah: “Busy, chaotic but organised. Staff getting along well, service running smoothly, and everyone shattered at the end of the day, that’s what a good day looks like to us!”
What is something you’re proud of in your job?
Demmi: “I’m proud of becoming a General Manager from a receptionist and of the team and culture we’ve built here. It’s so rewarding to see the workplace ethic and team spirit we’ve created.”
Hannah: “Absolutely, I feel the same. Seeing how everyone works together makes the kitchen run smoothly, also achieving 100% on our kitchen audit was a real highlight!”
What is the best thing about being a woman working in pubs?
Demmi: “The industry is changing, it’s becoming more of a level playing field. People take you more seriously, especially young women stepping into management.”
Hannah: “I still face stereotypes in the kitchen, but we’re proving every day that women can lead and succeed. We’re often treated like underdogs, but we’re not.”
Who has supported or inspired you most?
Both Demmi and Hannah: “It’s our colleagues at Robinsons, everyone is motivated, shares the same values, and works together as a team. That’s what makes Robinsons such a great place to grow and succeed.”
What advice would you give to other women thinking of coming into a pub role?
Demmi: “Be confident, gain product knowledge, speak with authority. If you’re challenged, back yourself and show that you mean business.”
Hannah: “Just go for it! Don’t question yourself. Have confidence and smash it. Form allies with other women, we’re all on the same path and can support each other.”
Cheers to Demmi and Hannah for what they’ve built at The Waggon & Horses. Here’s to raising a glass to women stepping up and making their mark in every corner of the pub.
