This month we're shining the spotlight on Dan Williamson the General Manager of the George III, who recently led his team to an incredible achievement, winning Pub and Bar of the Year for Wales.
Starting out as a kitchen porter, Dan has worked his way through almost every role hospitality has to offer. He has learnt the industry from the ground up before eventually taking on the role of General Manager.
For Dan, hospitality has always been about people, "The customer-facing side is still what I enjoy most. Making sure people have a nice time, getting to know them and building those relationships”. That personal touch is something guests quickly notice when they visit the George III. While the pub's location overlooking the Mawddach Estuary is undeniably special, Dan believes it's the people and atmosphere that keep guests coming back, "We've got lots of regulars and returning guests. Because we're a smaller hotel, you really get to know people. The team here are brilliant and that's what makes the difference”.
Building and maintaining that team has been one of Dan's biggest priorities throughout his time at The George III. When asked what the key is to building a successful pub team, his answer was simple: "Look after your people. If the staff are happy, it shows”.
Away from work, Dan's time is taken up by another long-standing passion. He owns around 40 Welsh ponies and regularly competes at shows across the country, including the Royal Welsh Show, where he has enjoyed considerable success over the years. Back at the George III, that same dedication has helped create an environment where both guests and team members feel valued.
Winning Pub and Bar of the Year for Wales was a proud moment, not just for Dan, but for everyone involved, "It's really nice to be recognised. The team deserve it and so does the pub”. The award carries particular significance for Dan, who has spent the last six years helping shape the George III into what it is today, "It feels personal. I've been here through so much and put a lot into the place. the George is a huge part of my life”.
It's that genuine passion for people, combined with years of hard work, that has helped make the George III such a success.
