The Bulls Head in Marple reopened its pub garden during the beginning of May with a new hybrid indoor and outdoor space. The extension builds on the pub’s 2020 refurbishment and gives the team freedom to use the garden throughout the year. It has created a welcoming new area for dining, live entertainment and private events.

A garden with a new lease of life

Before the extension, pub partners Allison and Kevin already had a popular beer garden in summer. When the weather turned colder or wetter, they needed a space that could work just as well all year round.

With support from the Property Team, that idea became a new indoor and outdoor extension. The space is ready for everyday trade, private functions and community events. The investment has added 36 covers which almost doubles the capacity of the pub no matter the weather.

Accessibility was carefully planned from the start. The team made sure there was safe access for wheelchair users and prams. They also took care to keep the space clear of trip hazards.

Built to be enjoyed in every season

The extension has a retractable roof, full-height sliding doors and windows with weatherproof furniture. In summer the space feels bright and open. In winter the heating helps keep it cosy and comfortable.

The design was created to feel like a natural part of the pub. Timber cladding brings warmth to the space and the wider entrance helps The Barn feel connected to the main building.

"During the build, we faced challenges around the levelling of the site, which meant we had to have two roofs and two separate structures rather than one. However, this has really paid off, as it now gives us the flexibility to create two spaces if needed."

The space also works well for different types of events. A separate sound system means music can be controlled away from the main bar. This makes The Barn a great fit for live music, private functions and busy day-to-day trade.

A space for the community

Since opening, The Barn has quickly become a favourite with customers. Live music nights have been a success, and the team has also hosted private functions which have received brilliant feedback.

Allison and Kevin are excited to make even more use of the space. They are looking at brunch events, cinema nights and craft workshops that will bring more people into the pub in the near future.

Customers have responded with real enthusiasm. Allison and Kevin said they are grateful for Robinsons’ support and feel the investment has helped move the business forward in a positive way.
