The Drum and Monkey brings a new look to Alderley Edge

One of Cheshire’s best kept secrets – The Drum and Monkey – which sits on the pleasant outskirts of the village of Alderley Edge, has now reopened following a 7-week £300k investment from 181-year-old family brewers, Robinsons Brewery, and licensees Carl Entwistle and Simon Kalton.

Exterior of the Drum and Monkey

Nicci Winsor, General Manager at the Drum and Monkey, commented:I’m excited to be a part of the new Drum and Monkey, and look forward to meeting all our guests, although I have already seen some familiar faces who visited my previous pub, The Ship at Styal!”

Formally known as the Moss Rose, The Drum and Monkey was purchased by Robinsons in 1949 and is now the only remaining traditional pub situated in the leafy village of Alderley Edge. The pub was in need of a makeover in order to develop the trading opportunity and give customers a more modernised venue to relax and dine in – and it’s safe to say, customers are going bananas for the pub’s brand-new look!

The pub now boasts a brand-new extension which can accommodate over 45 extra customers in cosy areas and new green velour and oak seating, looking out onto the greenery. Improving customer flow and pub trade, the expansion gives customers easier access to the patio and large beer garden – perfect for Summer events and parties - and offers a newly refreshed space to enjoy delicious pub classics from battered cod, mushy peas, chips and tartare sauce to juicy beef burgers, as well as mouth-watering vegetarian options. The pub also offers a specials menu designed to give customers something new to try each week.

New extension area

With a feature fireplace, large cornered leather chairs and decorative oriental style rugs, the extension feels warm, welcoming and comfortable.

The Drum and Monkey now follows a pastel green and grey colour scheme, partnered with oak furnishings. Exposed beams have been sandblasted throughout the pub and new herringbone oak flooring blankets and brightens all areas. The snug/fire room to the side of the bar boasts a roaring open fire, perfect for the coming Winter months, with cosy leather-seated areas, checked cream and green curtains, and an array of board games for friends and families to enjoy over food and drinks. The walls are decorated with Cheshire bric-a-brac and painted hardwood windows that add to the cottage-style of the building.

Wayne Roach, Business Development Manager at Robinsons Brewery, said:The vision of the job was to keep it simple, and build on the pub’s relaxed charm and character. It was important to retain the quality pub feel with real fires, traditional ambiance and atmosphere. Making it comfortable for drinkers and diners alike and growing the local trade.”

The once dark and tired bar, which sits in the centre of the pub, has been sandblasted, revived and re-coloured a duck-egg grey. Fixed lighting illuminates the overhead wine glass storage and shines a light on the superb drinks range, including Amstel, Dizzy Blonde, Unicorn, Trooper, Old Tom, Stowford Press, Robinsons Stout and Helles, and a selection of wines and spirits. This Cheshire treasure is integral to the local community and caters for a range of customers; from ladies who lunch to families, couples, and those looking for a great pub with a vibrant atmosphere… the Drum and Monkey is the perfect spot to come together.

The toilets have further benefited from a full refurbishment, with the addition of dark grey wall tiles, black hexagon floor tiles combined with matching skirting and natural timber doors. The toilets also incorporate new universally accessible facilities.

Externally, there is new lighting scheme and the access road to the car-park has been re-surfaced for customer convenience and supplier deliveries.
