Leading community retailer, Co-op and the historic family-run brewery, Robinsons, have served consumers well with a range of Co-op beers.
Back in March 2017, the two iconic North West community brands – Co-op and Robinsons, born within six years of each other in neighbouring counties – came together to launch a brand-new range of craft beers. In a retailer first Co-op Members helped to influence the tasting descriptions on the beer labels and shelf edge labels, which have proved a success as the beers have sold over one million pints in just over one year.
Richard Dennett, Senior Beer Buyer at Co-op said: “Beer sales are incremental to BWS at Co-op and it’s great to see that this project, which brings innovation and excitement to the category, has been a big success with customers."
“Innovation, quality and price are major factors in the recent sway of consumer opinion of own brand. We have recently redesigned our beers, ciders and spirits range to offer a cohesive and eclectic range at a time when the popularity of own-brand products continues to rise.”
Kate Flanagan, Off Trade Sales Manager for Robinsons Brewery, said: “We were delighted to work with Co-op and brew its first Member beers. In addition to showcasing our brew house and the sorts of great tasting beers we can produce, it’s been an incredibly collaborative project that demonstrates the real value that Co-op Members can bring to the production process."
“The beers have been on Co-op shelves just over a year and we’re very proud to see they have been such a success; selling over one million pints in this time is an astonishing achievement and is credit to the design, quality, and taste of the beer itself.”
Based in the heart of Stockport for almost two centuries, Robinsons is one of the oldest and most respected names in British brewing history and still remains a proud family-run independent brewer; now the legacy of the sixth generation of the Robinson family. Robinsons is also home to one of the most advanced and sophisticated breweries in the UK with a worldwide reputation for beer quality.
The three beer styles chosen are each brewed with fresh spring water filtered down from the Peak District National Park which purifies as it filters down through the sandstone and collects in the well which sits underneath Robinsons Brewery. The three ales – Golden Ale, IPA and Triple Hop – are available in Co-op stores nationwide now.
Co-op has pioneered regional ranging in convenience and will continue its roll out. The convenience retailer has provided sustainable route to market solutions for smaller brewers, established a local ale range and supported microbreweries. Co-op has also invested in building its local sourcing strategy for beer and wine as the retailer continues to champion British.
