Celebrity Chef Simon Rimmer welcomed competitors to the award-winning Airport Pub last Tuesday for the ultimate gastronomy challenge, Man vs. Food.
With the stage set, Simon introduced threw down the gauntlet to over 30 hungry punters. The challenge was not for the faint hearted; devour a gargantuan 32oz burger comprised of delicious pulled pork, beef brisket, fried chicken and two beef patties along with a host of side dishes and a pint of Robinsons’ award-winning Unicorn ale in under 30 minutes.
With belt buckles loosened and a crowd of spectators looking on, competitors attempted to tackle the mountainous challenge using a variety of different strategies; some faring better than others.
With the clock counting down to the final moments and the majority of the participants throwing in the towel, it was Marcin Trad, 33, who managed to defeat the challenge just as the klaxon sounded.
Marcin Trad, who won his own height in beer for completing the challenge, said: “At the start, Simon mentioned that after 8 minutes most people crumble so my strategy was to eat as much as I could in that time and then focus on finishing over the course of the next 20 minutes. The night was a great success with a brilliant atmosphere. Bring on the next challenge!”
Simon Rimmer said: “We had several competitors who stood out from the pack but each of them, bar Marcin, fell at the last hurdle. People who watch these events always think they could do it faster or better but when it stares them in the face they realise how difficult these challenges really are. I applaud everyone who took part and came along to support our competitors.”
The event was part of The Airport Pub’s first year celebrations. Since reopening after a major investment from Robinsons Brewery in January 2015, The Airport has welcomed thousands of visitors, customers and aviation enthusiasts. The pub has since won ‘Best UK Pub Design’ at the acclaimed Restaurant and Bar Awards and will be represented in the ‘Best New Pub’ category at the national 2016 Publican Awards.
