So, where did the name St Tudwal’s come from, was it the Bishop or the Island?

    THE BISHOP
Tudwal was said to be the son of Hoel Mawr (Hoel I) and a brother of Saint Lenorius. Tudwal travelled to Ireland to learn the scriptures, and then became a hermit on Saint Tudwal's Island East, off the coast of North Wales. Tudwal later immigrated to Brittany, settling in Lan Pabu with 72 followers, where he established a large monastery under the patronage of his cousin, King Deroch of Domnonée. Tudwal was made Bishop of Tréguier on the insistence of Childebert I, King of the Franks.

    THE ISLANDS
Well, not much is known about the islands but given the period in History that Tudwal was a hermit on the east island you could be forgiven for assuming the islands are named after him.

    ST TUDWALS INN

St Tudwals Inn as it is today (or St Tudwell’s as it is sometimes spelled) appears in the 1881 census returns, so it is possible that it was either built / converted from an existing building between 1871 and 1881 (i.e. when the previous census was taken).  Intriguingly, a St Tudwell’s Hotel is mentioned in a newspaper article dated from August 1873. As is the case with trying to date old buildings, it can be almost impossible to get a completely accurate date. The St Tudwal’s Inn is, most probably, the first and oldest public house in the village of Abersoch. In more recent history Robinsons saw the St Tudwals as an opportunity to acquire a prestigious venue in, probably the most beautiful village in North Wales and acquired the property in 1973. We welcome your input to the history of St Tudwals Inn if it helps us provide more accurate information. Please forward to: info@sttudwalsabersoch.co.uk
