This characterful traditional Inn dates back to the 18th century when it was originally a smallholding. Between 1840 and 1921 the Inn’s walls housed a factory producing aerated water, drawn from a well at the back of the building. However the enterprising Hodgeson family, which occupied the premises at the time, also retailed beer from the 1840’s.
With generous parking, at the back and even more just over the road, guests can enjoy the summer sunshine on seating at the front or in the secluded beer garden at the back. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and there are plenty of off-road trails from the front door, including the Latterbarrow pathway, right next to the pub.
Beloved by walkers, climbers, cyclists and a regular haunt for hamlet residents, its friendly and relaxed atmosphere has secured the pub’s place at the centre of things since the 1700s. You can look forward to a blazing open fire in the winter, and a welcome that’s just as warm in the summer months
Between refreshment, forays to Tarn Hows, Wray Castle, Hill Top - Beatrix Potter’s home, and the gorgeous village of Hawkshead are also strongly recommended. And if all that dashing about gets too much, there’s always the option of a comfy bed and a hearty Cumbrian breakfast in one of the Inn’s refurbished guest rooms. In a setting that’s been a settlement for many hundreds of years it’s a real treat to be part of it.
Whether you’re visiting us on your own, as a family or with a large group, we are delighted to welcome you to The Outgate.
