Waggon and Horses Refurbishment
Licensee Joe Smith

Long time Licensees Joe and Lorraine Smith have welcomed back regulars to the popular Waggon and Horses pub in Matley following an extensive refurbishment.

Joe and his partner Lorraine took over the helm of the Robinsons pub 19 years ago and have since helped the Waggon and Horses gain an excellent reputation in the area for great classic pub food and a cellar of well-kept cask ales and beer.

Initially, we approached Robinsons to help us put a greater emphasis on our drinks rangeexplained Joe. “The pub has always been a good place to eat and we wanted to give the bar area an added focus. After a couple of chats, we decided it might be time to not just improve the bar area but to give the whole pub a fresh coat of paint.

Robinsons in-house design team quickly got to work re-imagining the Waggon and Horses with a modern colour scheme and an emphasis on the traditional features of the building. The result is a cosy and homely pub which feels contemporary whilst keeping its classic features intact.
The bar area has been opened and extended to create a bigger and better drinking area with more seating around it. With four hand pulls serving a range of Robinsons’ award-winning cask ales, a new draught line primed to pour a rotating range of kegged craft beers from around the world and a hand-picked selection of premium spirits and wines, the Waggon and Horses is guaranteed to be a favourite haunt for many years to come.

Alongside the refurbishment, the pub will continue to serve homely, comfort pub food with a new menu of old favourites and new dishes to explore.

Wayne Roach, Business Development Manager for Robinsons Brewery said: “The end results are really fantastic and the Waggon and Horses is a great example of a pub that has embraced its past whilst looking towards the future. I am delighted to have had the chance to work with Joe and Lorraine and I know that the refurbishment will be well received by customers old and new.

The reaction from everyone has been amazing” explained Joe. “Robinsons have done a great job and we really feel that the change will encourage people to choose the pub whether stopping by for some food or just having a quick pint with friends.

The refurbishment of the Waggon and Horses is part of Robinsons’ commitment to investing their profits back into their large pub estate across the North West, Cumbria and North Wales.

William Robinson, Managing Director (Pub Division), commented: “We remain committed to the development and enhancement of our core tenanted pub estate with amplified investment going into repairs as well as refurbishments.

The Waggon and Horses in Matley is open now serving freshly prepared food and a rotating range of cask ales, craft beer, lagers, spirits and award-winning wines. For more information on the pub please visit and like the pub on Facebook:
