The local favourite, situated on High Street West, was closed for four weeks whilst Robinsons’ award winning in-house design team transformed the pub from its tired former look into a contemporary meeting place which celebrates cask ale and the emerging craft beer market.
Originally called The Surrey Arms Hotel, the pub dates back to 1844 however the current site is from a reconstruction in 1878 when The Oakwood was rebuilt with grander gothic style architecture. Brewery records date back to 1880 when John Gardener Sykes claimed a leasehold of the land from Edward George Lord, the 1st Barron Howard of Glossop. The tavern was purchased by William Robinson in 1920 to become part of the Robinsons estate and renamed The Oakwood in 1991. Since the purchase by the brewery over 4 million pints of ale have been served to its many regulars.
The design, which was chosen to be sympathetic to the building’s Victorian features, has completely transformed the interior and created a bohemian space that is full of character and intrigue. A new palette of soft creams and light greys mix beautifully with the brand new dark wooden back bar which now towers up to the high ceiling of the grade 2 listed pub. Roaring open fires create a warm and inviting atmosphere whilst quirky furnishings such as grandfather clocks and unique copper top bar are guaranteed to be a popular talking point.
The pub, which often lends its walls to displaying the work of local artists, will continue to be a hub for the arts community with live music, poetry evenings and theatrical performances.
A brand new menu now offers a great range of snacks, crated using fresh locally sourced ingredients, including homemade soups, nachos and, of course, The Oakwood’s famous burger menu including the ‘Hot Mother’, a 6oz beef patty doused in fiery homemade hot sauce – certainly not for the faint of heart!

The changes have given the pub a new lease on life whilst maintaining the original features that drew people to the Oakwood in the first place!
