The Masons Arms, Southport, is within arm’s reach of raising over £15,000 for cancer charities across the North West.
Brenda Kelly and her team of fundraisers have cycled, ran and, in one extreme case, skydived their way to the impressive number but look to tip the current amount of £14,929 over the edge with a Santa’s sleigh full of raffle prizes.
“Our regulars know many people who have been affected by Cancer and, in some cases, lost people to the disease” said Brenda. “2 years ago, we set ourselves a goal to raise as much money as possible; we honestly never expected to raise the amount we have!”
The Masons Arms are part of the 96% of pubs throughout the UK that annually contribute to charity through fundraising. Research carried out by industry body PubAid shows that throughout 2013 community pubs have raised over £100 million with the figure growing by 5% each year.
Amongst the many fundraising events it was Brenda’s heart racing skydive that got many regulars talking and, ultimately, putting their hands into their pockets for the cause.
“It was a hair raising experience!” said Brenda. “To say the adrenaline was pumping would be an understatement but once we jumped the feeling was incredible. I can certainly understand how people can get addicted to the thrill!”
Wayne Roach, Business Development Manager for Robinsons Brewery said: "I do not know where Brenda gets her energy from, as well as running the Masons Arms, Brenda devotes a great deal of personal time towards fundraising events and supporting cancer charities. The events are popular with staff and customers and it’s their generosity that helps to make them successful. The Masons is very much at the heart of the community and Brenda deserves both recognition and thanks for her efforts and contribution to such worthwhile causes.”
The pub is now set to host a Christmas Raffle on December 14th that will see one lucky winner receive everything to make everyone in their family feel like they’ve been added to Santa’s nice list.
Brenda said: “The hamper will contain everything from a selection of premium spirits and Robinsons beers to lots of stocking fillers and food. We want to basically give someone the opportunity to enjoy Christmas without the worry of cost! We hope everyone will come down, buy a ticket and help us hit a total of over £15,000 raised for charity!”
